Everyone knows someone who has done a working holiday in Australia. However whilst you like their Instagram pictures with envy, what you don’t see back in rainy England is the reality of establishing a completely new life on the opposite side of the globe - and it isn’t always sunshine, surfing and beer. I have now been in Australia for a week and I can’t deny that although it is exciting it has also proved incredibly difficult. The rush of travelling and the option to go on whatever adventure you please has now been replaced with the knowledge that I have to find a job and a place to live. I am no longer travelling - I am living here.
Not only was it raining when I arrived at my hostel, I was also in a room of 10 people and the WiFi wasn’t working. My roommates were mostly long term residents who are working in Melbourne and still gripping onto the backpacker lifestyle - I was welcomed into the fold with open arms and passed a bag of ‘Goon’. I couldn’t celebrate however. Although I had finally made it to the place I had my heart set on, I felt uneasy knowing that my funds were slowly trickling away with no source of income. The next day I set out on a mission to set everything up that was required to live here in Melbourne.
Having completed all of this in a day I went to my bunk-bed feeling accomplished and ready for the next step. A week later, the next step of finding a room and a job are still pending and each day as my money decreases I become more anxious but remain positive that everything will eventually fall into place. The trouble with these two steps is that they are equally time consuimg and require hours of trawling through the internet and walking around bars and shops - and though I am prepared to put the work in, I haven’t had much time to see the city sites and take a moment to relax. I might take the day off today and enjoy the start of the summer sunshine (and post a picture to make everyone jealous) but for the time being I am homeless, jobless and most importantly friendless - don’t be deceived by my use of social media.
